Would you like to experiment with a design like this? You'll find a supply list below, including a link to the stencil I used from A Colorful Life Designs. Follow the link and use discount code ChrisFan10 to save 10% on your entire order! (Master Creator Bundles are excluded as they already have a 20% discount built in.)

Let’s get Started:

Card Base: 5.5 x 8.5, scored and folded at 4.25

Border:5.5 x 4

Card Face:5.25 x 3.75

Card Face:

  • I placed the card face onto my Grip Mat and applied light blue ink across the surface.

  • Leaving the stencil in place, I added blue DIY embossing paste** here and there on top of the ink.

  • I removed the stencil carefully, and immediately put it into water. I put the card face aside to dry.

  • Once dry, I used the butterfly die and the Big Shot to create the butterfly openings in the card face.

Other

  • I looked through my collection of “someday” backgrounds in my Ready To Go Binder *** and selected one that I felt would compliment the card. I die-cut the butterfly from the center of this, saving the rest to become the border.

  • I also selected a piece that had been created with pigment crystals to place behind the butterfly openings to create contrast.

  • Finally, I selected a sentiment from the binder, which I had created long ago and was waiting for the right card to put it to use.

*** See Ready To Go Binder under Techniques in the header to learn how I use this tool to be more efficient.

Assembly

  • I glued the piece created with pigment crystals behind the butterfly openings.

  • I glued the border layer to the card base and added the card face on top of these.

  • I used a micro liner to trace around the first butterflies, to add definition and visual interest.

  • I glued the die cut butterfly in place as shown.

  • I put dimensional foam tape on the back of the sentiment and put it in place.

  • I added tiny colour-changing gems to each butterfly.

Final Thoughts:

This card is far busier than my designs usually are - but I like it anyway. The card face has a lovely sheen where the embossing paste was used, and the border layer had some foiling on it - that shines when the light hits it. Bold and vibrant!
